Licent 231 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected by the railway at Makiapou, in northern Shanxi, China, on 20 July 1914 by the Jesuit R. P. Licent. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds a sheet as P06884304,[1] and the Tianjin Natural History Museum in Tianjin a second as TIE 00004143.[2]
Collection and locality
Licent's printed form, with the faint oval stamp of his museum at Tientsin (Laboratoire d'Histoire naturelle, Mission du Tchely S.E., S.J.), is completed with the number 231, the station Chemin de fer (railway), the locality Makiapou, the date 20 VII 14 and Chansi N. The museum label reads R. P. Licent. Chine septentrionale. Reçu le 24 Août 1922.[3] The Tianjin sheet carries the museum's printed Herbier form, completed with the number 231, the family Cannabinée (Urticacée), the name Cannabis sativa. L. and Chanvre (hemp), and, typed, the station Chemin de fer, the locality Makiapou and the date 20 VII 14.[4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a much-branched, leafy stem with flowers and a long, bare length of stem, with a fragment packet.[3] The museum label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., with the stamp Det. Handel-Mazzetti 1928; the catalogue records Cannabis sativa L.[3][1] The Tianjin sheet carries a long leafy branch with male flowers.[4] Licent gathered cannabis again that October at Cheou-yang: Licent 886 (1914).
