Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The Paris label places the plant at Cheou-yang, in central Shansi, on 4 October 1914, with no habitat or use. The slip on the Tianjin sheet adds Cultivé: the plant was taken from a crop. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1914. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other, before the Tianjin sheet was read.
Label reading
Read from GBIF's cached copy of the holder's image (2,000 pixels wide).
- Licent's label (handwritten): 886 / Shansi central / Cheouyang W. / 4 X '14; a faint oval stamp of the Musée Hoang-ho Pai-ho.
- Museum label. Cannabis sativa L. / det. Handel-Mazzetti 1928 / R. P. LICENT. — Chine Septentrionale. / Reçu le 24 Août 1922.
- Tianjin sheet (TIE 00004144), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (TIE 00004144, 1,000 × 1,659 pixels). Slip (pencil, French): Chanvre – / Cheou-yang-shien / Cultivé / 4.X.14. Printed HERBIER form of the Musée Hoang-ho Pai-ho: 886 (1450 above the frame) / Famille Urticacée (struck through; 大麻科 faint) / Nom scientifique Cannabis sativa L. / Station Shansi (typed) / Localité Cheouyang W (typed) / 4.X.14 (typed). A second slip (ink): 886, a struck-out line, and = 231 = 829. Barcode TJNHM HERBARIUM (TIE). The readings agree; the last letter of the slip's place name is uncertain in one.
Georeferencing
The point 37.82, 113.13 is the middle of Shouyang County's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 3441291, about 2,116 km²), checked to fall inside it. Cheouyang is read as the French romanisation of Shouyang (Wikidata Q1197229), which lies in central Shanxi as the label's Shansi central has it; neither Wikidata item for the county carries that spelling. The label's W. is not explained, and may mean the west of the county. It is an area point for the county, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 26 km.
Editorial treatment
Date. 4 X '14 is 4 October 1914.
Collector. He is Émile Licent (1876–1952), a French Jesuit and the founder of the Musée Hoangho Paiho at Tientsin, who began in 1914 an exploration of north China from Tientsin; by 1932 about 4,100 of his plants had gone to the Paris museum (Fournier 1932; French Wikipedia). The sources read do not give his route in 1914. The museum label calls him R. P. Licent (Révérend Père); the collector field keeps the catalogue's Licent, and the prose links Émile Licent.
Determination. The stamp Det. Handel-Mazzetti 1928 gives a surname only. It fits Heinrich von Handel-Mazzetti (1882–1940), the Austrian botanist who travelled in China from 1914 to 1918 and then worked on the Chinese flora in Vienna (English Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index), but no source read records him determining Licent's plants, so the name stays in plain text.
Two sheets, one accession. The Paris and Tianjin sheets share the number, the place and the date. The Tianjin sheet names no collector; Licent's name comes from the Paris label. The second slip's = 231 = 829 sets this number beside the museum's numbers 231 (Licent 231 (1914)) and 829 (a 1914 sheet from Pei-ta-ho); it says nothing more about the link. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the collector as Cheouyang, W. That is the place on Licent's label; the museum label names Licent.
- The Paris label gives no word on cultivation; the slip on the Tianjin sheet reads Cultivé.
