Landrace Mafia, which sells its seed as Trident Seeds, is a cannabis seed seller whose website, landracemafia.org, lists lines it describes as landraces from India, Nepal, Thailand, Afghanistan and Siberia, together with crosses of its own.[1] The site calls the group "a dedicated group of preservationists, researchers, and cannabis experts" and says that it works "closely with traditional farmers".[2] Most of its lines come from the Malana and Parvati valleys of Himachal Pradesh.[1]
History
Buyers on the growers' forum Overgrow were ordering from the account @landracemafia, which they also called Trident Seeds, by January 2020.[3][4] In December 2020 a member of Rollitup opened a thread on "these guys who call themselves Trident Seeds or Landrace Mafia", after buying its Wailing Valley and Kali Ram Hashplant lines in a Christmas offer.[5] Buyers in that thread wrote of orders on their way from India.[6] In October 2021 an Overgrow member received seed in a wooden box marked Trident Seeds, inside an envelope with an Indian customs declaration.[7] In 2023 another member described Landrace Mafia as "a Trident affiliate with Trident handling sales and LM the fieldwork/advertising".[8] The website's blog carries a post dated 18 August 2023.[9]
Lines and their stated origins
The website lists 36 lines as landraces, each with a place, an altitude, map coordinates, a flowering time and the product local farmers make from it.[1] Twelve are named selections from three valleys near Malana: Wailing, Nirang and Waichin. The site places Wailing at 3,200 metres and describes the trek to it from Malana as "a steep 7 kilometres".[10] The Kaliram Hashplant is named for a Nirang farmer who, the site says, selected plants with dark colours.[11] Three lines come from villages of the Parvati Valley and three from Uttarakhand.[1]
The other landrace lines come from Nepal (Panauti, Dhading, Langtang, Manaslu and Manang), from West Bengal and the north-east (Darjeeling, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Shillong), from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, from Chiang Rai in Thailand, and from Kemerovo in Russia.[1] Its Afghan line is Baharak General Population.[12] In 2021 an Overgrow member, quoting a message from @landracemafia, wrote that its Baharak seeds were "new afghan selections from @baaba879".[13]
The site's "Landrace Hybrids" are crosses of other lines with a male it calls the "Purple Inthanon Thai Landrace", and a Malana × Urgam cross.[14]
Links with other sellers
A Rollitup member who ordered Balochistan seed "through Landracemafia/Trident seed" in 2021 wrote that it was "sent through FullPowerselections",[15] the shop that sells the Indian Landrace Exchange's lines.[16] The Overgrow member LandraceWarden wrote in 2023 that the Kandahar Arghandab selections "were the first collaboration release of limited selections via Landrace Mafia".[17]
Reception
Buyers on Overgrow and Rollitup have complained of poor germination. In January 2020 one wrote of "horrible germination rates";[3] in February 2021 another reported that the seller had tested a pack of Kali Ram Hashplant at 70 per cent;[18] and in 2023 a third reported 48 seeds of Kali Ram and Wailing Valley that did not germinate.[8] Others reported replacement seed sent for failed packs.[19] A buyer wrote in 2025 that all of their packs carried "the coordinates where the seeds were collected".[20]
