Châu Đốc is a historical cannabis growing area in An Giang Province, in the Mekong delta of southern Vietnam, on the border with Cambodia. Writing in 1973, the ethnobotanist Marie Alexandrine Martin reported that cannabis cultivation in Vietnam was important at Châu Đốc, which she called "a Cambodian border region".[1]
Cultivation
Martin's study of cannabis in Southeast Asia rests mainly on Cambodia, with observations from Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.[1] In Cambodia she often found small plots of cannabis around houses, the largest garden she saw holding about seventy plants, and she wrote that "along the river and closer to Vietnam, cultivation of these plants is of greater importance."[1] She judged cultivation hardly more widespread in Laos than in Cambodia. For Vietnam she names one place: cultivation "is important in Chaudec", her spelling of Châu Đốc.[1]
