Kumargram is a landrace cannabis appellation in the Alipurduar growing area of The Dooars, in Alipurduar District, West Bengal, India. It covers the Kumargram community development block, the eastern end of the district on the Assam border. Police destroyed cannabis grown on four plots at Purba Narathali in January 2026.[1]

History

In 1911 Kumargram was a small village with the headquarters of the Bhalka tahsil, a twice-weekly market, a dispensary and a police outpost, with roads to Alipur Duar and to Chakchaka on the Cooch Behar boundary.[2]: 152 Bhalka was one of the four tahsils of the Western Duars, the only one run by a naib-tahsildar rather than a sub-deputy collector.[2]: 125 Bhalka had also been one of the ten parganas of 1870,[3]: 275 and Bhulka the sixth of the eleven Bengal duars in Eden's list.[4]: 8–9 (Eden's report)

Cultivation and enforcement

In January 2026 Alipurduar District Police, acting on information, raided Purba Narathali under the Kamakhyaguri outpost of Kumargram police station and uprooted and burned cannabis growing on four separate plots.[1] Police at the Barobisha outpost seized 130 kg of ganja from a vehicle at Pakhriguri, on the Assam and Bengal boundary, in October 2022.[5]
