Kopi ganja (Indonesian for "cannabis coffee") is a name for ground coffee mixed with cannabis. Press and police reports describe it as made in Aceh and sold there and in Jakarta.[2][3]

Seed in coffee

The informants who describe it as an older practice speak of the seed. Ibrahim, a restaurant owner from Aceh interviewed in Jakarta in 2017, told Merdeka.com that coffee in Aceh was commonly mixed with cannabis seed, which gave it a different, fresh taste; the mixture arose, he said, because cannabis used to grow beside the coffee trees. The paper's correspondent in Aceh said that ground seed was mixed with coffee powder, though he did not know how.[4] The Transnational Institute's 2016 briefing says that cannabis in coffee and tea is commonly found in Aceh.[5]: 9

Trade

In 2015 the Sydney Morning Herald reported three young men in Banda Aceh grinding 10 grams of cannabis into 250 grams of arabica beans grown in Gayo and selling the mixture to cafes as "Coffee Lawak".[1] In February 2020 Agence France-Presse described a producer in Aceh, called Agus in the report (not his real name), who roasted coffee and cannabis together in a wok at about 70 per cent coffee to 30 per cent cannabis and sold it for 1 million rupiah a kilogram. "If you put more than 30 percent ganja in there then you lose the coffee taste," he said.[3]

In December 2020 the South Jakarta police announced the seizure of 1,718 grams of kopi ganja, with cannabis milk and cannabis dodol, ordered from a supplier in Aceh. The narcotics unit's head said the makers used cannabis and the other ingredients in equal parts.[2]
