Il'in 288 is a herbarium accession of cannabis gathered in floodplain forest in a river valley of the Talas Alatau, near the village of Dimitrievka, today's town of Talas in Talas Region, Kyrgyzstan, on 25 July 1930 by M. M. Il'in, and named on its label Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818709.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label is that of the herbarium of the Всесоюзный Научно-Исследовательский Институт Каучука и Гуттаперчи (All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Rubber and Gutta-percha), headed M. Iljin. Iter ad Asiam Mediam. (M. Il'in, journey to Middle Asia). It reads, partly printed and partly by hand, Таласский Алатау, окр. с. Димитриевки. Пойменный лес по долине р. (Talas Alatau, environs of the village of Dimitrievka; floodplain forest along the valley of the river), followed by the river's name, which is not clearly legible, and 25/VII 1930 г. № 288 and Leg. М. М. Ильин.[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the number, the date and the place, naming the river Биш-таш.[1] Dimitrievka (Dmitrievka) was the name of the town of Talas until 1937.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries one long, branched stem laid on the diagonal, with many small leaves, and an empty envelope at the top left.[2] The label names the plant Cannabis ruderale Janisch., the label's spelling of Cannabis ruderalis; the line for the determiner carries only a mark. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa. Under it lies Small's earlier slip, numbered RB 180, which names the plant Cannabis sativa L.; its date, 1 September 1974, shows through the later slip. The catalogue gives Small and August 1975 as the determination, under the name Cannabis sativa L.[2][1]
