Hummel 909 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis collected in the Bogdo Ola (Bogda Shan), the mountains east of Ürümqi in Xinjiang, China, on 31 August 1928 by David Hummel of Sven Hedin's Sino-Swedish Expedition. Hummel collected another number, 908, at the same place on the same day. The Swedish Museum of Natural History holds the sheet as S05-59.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label of the expedition reads Turkestania sinensis (Prov. Sinkiang): in montibus Bogdo Ola (Chinese Turkestan, province of Sinkiang: in the Bogdo Ola mountains) and D. Hummel. It is completed by hand with the number 909, the date 31/8 1928 and in valle Losan-Go, in prato, ca. 1700 m (in the Losan-Go valley, in a meadow, at about 1,700 m).[2] A later pencil note above the label reads Cannabis EE 2005 03 jan. The catalogue gives the place and the date, 31 August 1928, but not the altitude.[1]
Specimen and identification
The label names the genus only, Cannabis, and the catalogue records the sheet as Cannabis L.[1] The sheet carries one branched flowering stem with narrow leaflets.[2] Hummel's other cannabis gatherings in the Bogdo Ola that summer are numbers 164, 679, 874, 908; a year earlier he had collected a cultivated plant in southern Mongolia, Hummel 1330 (1927).
