Gremiatschensky s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered in the desert at the Inder hills, north of the Caspian in western Kazakhstan, by S. J. Gremiatschensky, for a series on the plants of the Bukey Horde dated 1855. The Moscow University Herbarium holds two sheets, MW0818724[1] and MW0818725.[2] The sheets give no date of collection.
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry the same printed label of the Imperial Moscow University: Gremiatschensky, S. J. Die Pflanzen der Bukejewschen Kirgisen-Horde. 1855. (The plants of the Bukey Kirghiz Horde), with a list of the series' places in brackets: Ryn-Peski Sanddünen, Gross. Bogdo, Bisch-tau, Jakschi-bisch-tau, Arsagar, Baskuntschatskoje-See et cet.[3] The label names a series and its area, and 1855 is the year in its title, not a date of collection. The specimens' own slips, in one hand, name the place: Cannabis sativa L. mont. Inder. and Cannabis sativa Desert. on the first sheet, and Cannabis sativa L. Deserto M. Inder. (in the desert, Mount Inder) on the second.[3][4] The catalogue gives the collector and the year 1855 for both sheets, with no locality.[1][2] The Inder hills rise from the Caspian lowland on the border of today's Atyrau and West Kazakhstan regions, beside the salt lake Inder.
Specimen and identification
The first sheet carries two plants, a stout leafy one and a slender flowering one; the second, several long, slender stems folded to fit the sheet, with leafy flowering tops.[3][4] The slips name the plant Cannabis sativa L. without a determiner. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L., on each sheet, the name under which the catalogue files both.[3][1]
