Grahan is an appellation within the Parvati Valley landrace cannabis growing area in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh. It is named after Grahan village, the largest of three charas-producing settlements in a side valley off the main Parvati Valley. The other two are Pulgi to the south and Thunja to the north-east.
Geography
Grahan village sits at around 2400 m on south-facing slopes within a damp, partly shaded part of the side valley. Cultivation extends from riverside terraces near 2100 m up to high pastures around 3000 m.
Three named field complexes are recognised within the appellation:
- The Riverside fields (2100–2350 m), on terraces below the village. Several plots were lost to road construction in 2024.
- The Terraces (2400–2700 m), the main village fields surrounding the settlement.
- The Kutla fields (2700–3000 m), the highest cultivated terraces above the village.
Cannabis cultivation
The local population is a domesticate NLD-type landrace cultivated for charas production through hand-rubbing of standing plants. A feral component is also present on disturbed ground and abandoned terraces.
