Ereğli is a historical landrace cannabis growing area in Konya Province, Turkey, mapped on the district of Ereğli. After the Ottoman government had banned sowing the plant in 1872 and again in 1876, the villagers of the kaza of Ereğli, in the vilayet of Konya, planted 1,300 dönüm with cannabis for esrar under the name of kendir (hemp).[1]: 80

History

The Ottoman government banned the sowing of hemp in 1872, after the Civil Medical Society (Cemiyet-i Tıbbiye-i Mülkiye) told the grand vizier that the plant was seldom used in making medicines and that its use as an intoxicant did great harm. The ban was repeated in 1876 and sent to every province. Sowing went on. The villagers of Ereğli, having planted their 1,300 dönüm, opposed the order to gather and burn the crop, saying it would cause them heavy losses. Administrators were often warned to take the measures needed so that such cases did not recur.[1]: 80 Onur Gezer's account of the Ereğli case rests on files of the Ottoman Council of State (Şûrâ-yı Devlet) dated 1299 and 1302 in the Islamic calendar, that is, 1881–82 and 1885.[1]: 80

In 1912 a Hungarian company sought land around Konya and Ereğli to grow hemp. A letter from Budapest stated that the company, a large one in the hemp trade, was ready to buy or lease about 10,000 hectares around Konya and Ereğli, on land with running water or wells, and later to build a hemp factory there. A memorandum of 10 April 1912 said that land of the size wanted could be found in one of the kazas of Karaman, Söğütlü or Ereğli, but the company's terms were judged unsuitable.[2]: 1229

In 1925 a Russian commission with the economic botanist Peter Zhukovsky collected cannabis across Anatolia. Zhukovsky placed the plants of Konya Province in his fourth type, with those of Yozgat, Burdur, Isparta, Tokat, Sivas and Kayseri, and found the greatest diversity in that type among the samples from Kayseri and Konya.[3]: 4–5
