Dibulla is a cannabis appellation in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta growing area, covering the mountain part of the municipality of Dibulla, in the department of La Guajira, Colombia.

Geography

The appellation lies on the northern slope of the massif.[1]: 3 The town of Dibulla and the coast, where the corregimientos (rural districts) of Palomino, Mingueo, Río Ancho and La Punta de los Remedios stand on the coastal highway, lie outside it.[2]: 5 It adjoins the Santa Marta appellation to the west.

History

A columnist of El Heraldo wrote in 2018 that the soils of the hill country by Mingueo proved well suited to marijuana, and that from the mid-1970s, for a decade, the village was one of the great buying centres of the crop, where peasants sold it by the quintal to intermediaries.[3]

Since 2000

The Ministry of Defence's eradication data list 84 entries of marijuana eradicated in Dibulla between May 2007 and December 2014, about 94 of the 200 hectares listed for La Guajira.[4] An early-warning alert of the national ombudsman's office in May 2018 reported that marijuana growing had increased in places with a strong foreign presence, among them Palomino, Mingueo and Dibulla. It was grown in small plots, split up to avoid detection, and criminal groups handed out the seed and bought the harvest at prices they set.[2]: 16–17
