Chaparral is a cannabis appellation in the Tolima growing area, covering the municipality of Chaparral in the south of the department of Tolima, Colombia.
Cultivation
The Ministry of Defence's eradication data list 19 entries of marijuana eradicated in Chaparral between December 2011 and March 2018, about 30 hectares, among them one entry of 4.5 hectares in December 2013.[1] A bulletin of the Centre for Regional Studies of the University of Tolima found that 18.4 per cent of the 64.75 hectares of marijuana eradicated by hand in Tolima in 2015–2020 was eradicated in Chaparral.[2]: 14, 16
In February 2016 the radio network La FM reported that the army's Zeus task force had eradicated more than 8,000 marijuana plants in rural Ataco, Chaparral and San Antonio.[3] In October 2017 soldiers destroyed 700 marijuana plants growing in the vereda (rural district) of El Mirador, in Chaparral. The army said the plants were a replanting, which it linked to the crop-substitution programmes then under way in southern Tolima; according to the investigation, the crop might belong to common criminals.[4]
