Caloto is a cannabis appellation in the Northern Cauca growing area, covering the municipality of Caloto in the department of Cauca, Colombia.

Geography

The appellation is the municipality, on the western side of the growing area. It adjoins the Corinto appellation to the north-east, Toribío to the east and Jambaló to the south. The road east from the Pan-American Highway meets the first hills of the Central Cordillera and passes Caloto on its way to the corregimiento of El Palo, where the road to Toribío begins.[1]

Cultivation

The Colombian Truth Commission dates crops of marijuana in Caloto and Corinto to the 1950s.[2]: 73 In 2012 a woman of El Palo said that her husband, detained on suspicion of supporting the guerrilla, had a greenhouse in which he grew marijuana; in the vereda (rural district) of El Pedregal, between Caloto and Toribío, residents said that coca and marijuana were their livelihood.[1] The journalist Diana Maria Pachón found 2,000 plants of the type called corinto or corintiana on a farm reached from the track that runs from El Palo towards Tacueyó.[3] In September 2013 the army dismantled two buildings planted with 900 cripi plants in El Vergel, in Caloto, and Santa Helena, in Corinto, and attributed them to the FARC.[4] Caloto was one of the four municipalities where the attorney general's office asked for the power supply to marijuana greenhouses to be cut in June 2019.[5]

A survey of the anti-narcotics police reported in 2021 located 41.4 hectares of marijuana in Caloto.[6] Indepaz estimated 1,871 growers in the municipality in 2023–2024.[7]: 46–47 The Ministry of Defence's eradication data list 31 entries of marijuana eradicated in Caloto between September 2013 and July 2019, about 16 hectares.[8]
