Bykov 142 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered on a loamy terrace above a floodplain, in grass steppe, in the Taldy-Kurgan uezd of Semirechye, Kazakhstan, on 7 September 1928 by A. N. Bykov. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818726.[1]
Collection and locality
The label is written in green ink on the back of a printed form of V. I. Smirnov's series for the Dzhetysu expedition, whose printed text shows through: А. Н. Быков. Растения Семиречья Талды-Курганского уезда. (A. N. Bykov. Plants of Semirechye, Taldy-Kurgan uezd), then Суглинист. площадка над поймой (a loamy platform above the floodplain), with the floodplain's name inserted above the line and not clearly legible, and a steppe described as grass-steppe of a kind whose second word is also unclear. It is dated 7 September 1928, numbered № 142 and signed соб. А. Быков (collected by A. Bykov); the line for the determiner is blank.[2] The catalogue gives the collector and the date, with no number or locality.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries two leafy stems bearing dense, compact flower clusters, and a bare stem with its roots.[2] The label names no plant. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. Under it lies an earlier typed slip numbered RB 180 that names the plant Cannabis sativa L.; only part of its printed heading, from the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, shows past the later slip. It is the form of Small's annotation of 1 September 1974. The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.[2][1]
