Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant on Суглинист. площадка над поймой (a loamy terrace above the floodplain), in grass steppe, in the Taldy-Kurgan uezd of Semirechye in September 1928. It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The plant grew in open steppe, outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3443 × 5200 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Label (green ink, on the back of a printed form of the Dzhetysu expedition, whose text shows through). А. Н. Быков / Растения Семиречья / Талды-Курганского уезда / Суглинист. площадка над поймой / [name, inserted above the line] / Злаково-[…] степь / 19 7/IX 28 г. (the 7 written over another figure) / № 142 / соб. А. Быков / опр. (blank).
  • Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • Earlier slip (typed, under Small's). Cannabis sativa L. / RB 180; the printed heading shows only in part (Annota…, Departmen…).
  • Readings that differ. The inserted name was read Коктам… (its end unclear) and Коктаны; a third look gave Кокта[м/н]ы. The steppe's second element was read …ичная (unread in part) and Эфтичное. Neither is used on the page.
  • The stamped number 230026 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label's only place below the uezd is the inserted name of the floodplain, read Коктамы or Коктаны. Nothing of that name was found in OpenStreetMap or Nominatim in Almaty and Jetisu regions under the spellings Koktam, Коктам, Köktam, Көктам and Кок-там. The nearest names are the Koktal river in Kerbulak District (relation 16057696) and the village of Koktal on the edge of Taldykorgan (way 168383334); taking either would mean re-reading the label's name. The Taldy-Kurgan uezd is a historical unit whose area is not that of a present-day district, so no area point or province is taken from it.

Editorial treatment

Taxon. The label names no plant; the infobox takes Cannabis sativa L., the name on the earliest slip, which carries no determiner's name where it shows. Small's 1975 determination is reported in the article.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's A. N. Bykov, the label's А. Н. Быков. No source read gives his full name, which is not linked.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives no number or locality; the label gives № 142 and the Taldy-Kurgan uezd.

These notes were recorded during accession preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 09:05, 12 October 2026 (+07)
