Evidentiary scope

Two statements carry this accession. The locality states cultivation at the Union du Sig near Oran and the event note states Originaire de l'Orient. The second is a provenance claim about the stock, not a locality: it says the plant came from the East and names no country, no supplier and no date. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.

The provenance note is worth keeping in view because it cuts against reading this sheet as evidence of a local Algerian population. Whoever wrote the label believed the material was introduced. Whether that belief was right and what l'Orient meant to a French agronomist in 1850, are not settled here.

The collector is given as Barat with no initial. He is not in the International Plant Names Index, which indexes authors of plant names and not collectors, so no dates are available and no lifespan test could be run on the 1850 date.

Durando s.n., Sig (1850) is a second sheet from the same establishment in the same year. The two are separate accessions, not duplicates. Their locality strings differ slightly, l'Union agricole du Sig against l'Union du Sig près Oran, which is consistent with two hands writing the same place and not with two places.
