Anon. s.n., Tokyo is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa cultivated at Tokyo, Japan, gathered on 20 September 1930, on the printed label of the specimen department of the Kyoto firm Shimadzu, with the Japanese name asa. The South China Normal University Herbarium in Guangzhou holds the sheet as SN006732.[1]
Collection and locality
The label is the printed form of the specimen department of Shimadzu Seisakusho, 島津製作所標本部撰集, also used for Anon. s.n., Kyoto (1905). On this sheet it gives the number No. 20, the family 桑 科 and Moraceae., the Japanese name アサ (asa) with Cannabia sativa L., a misprint of the genus, and the line 昭和五年九月廿日採集 東京(栽)產 (gathered on the 20th day of the ninth month of the fifth year of Shōwa, 20 September 1930; product of Tokyo, cultivated), with the numbers of the date written in by hand.[2] The catalogue gives Tokyo, cultivated (东京;栽培), and the same date.[1] GBIF gives Tokyo, cultivated, and the year 1930.[3] In 1930 Tokyo was a city of fifteen wards and also the name of the prefecture around it.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a short leafy shoot with narrow, toothed leaflets and two small, dense flowering clusters, a separate length of bare stem, and a glassine packet.[2] The label names it Cannabia sativa L., without a determiner's name, and the catalogue files the sheet under Cannabis sativa, in the family Moraceae.[1] A handwritten note in Chinese on red-ruled paper at the top right reads 名稱:大麻(大麻科)莖之纖維供紡織原料、種子供香料及榨油用。 (Name: dama, hemp, Cannabaceae. The fibre of the stem serves as raw material for spinning and weaving, the seed for spice and for pressing oil.).[2] The note gives the uses of hemp in general terms; it does not say that this plant was grown for them.
