Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label records the plant as 東京(栽)產 (product of Tokyo, cultivated), gathered on 20 September 1930, with the Japanese name アサ (asa). It is printed on the form of a specimen dealer, the specimen department of Shimadzu in Kyoto, and names Tokyo as the place the plant was grown. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1930. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The Chinese note added on the sheet gives the uses of hemp fibre and seed in general terms, not the use of this crop. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from NSII's image of the sheet (768 × 1024 pixels).
- Label (printed form, the numbers of the date in hand). No. 20, with the stamped number 1007721 (its first digit overstamped) and a pencilled 170 at the right / 桑 科 / Moraceae. / アサ, printed サ ア from right to left / Cannabia sativa L. / 昭和五年九月廿日採集 東京(栽)產, printed from right to left / 島津製作所標本部撰集, with two small characters above it cut by the edge of the image.
- Note (upper right, ink on red-ruled paper, in Chinese). 名稱:大麻(大麻科) / 莖之纖維供紡織 / 原料、種子供香料 / 及榨油用。, with 大麻 underlined in red.
- Barcode label. 华南师范大学植物标本室(SN) / SN006732. A glassine packet is fixed at the right.
- Readings that differ. One reading marked the 廿 of the day as uncertain; the catalogue's date, 20 September 1930, agrees with it. The two small characters above the firm's name were read 京都 once and 株式會社 once, and are not used.
Georeferencing
The point 35.68, 139.76 is the centre of Tokyo as OpenStreetMap maps it (node 265018692, place=city), in Chiyoda ward. In 1930 Tokyo named the city of Tokyo, made up of fifteen wards from 1889 until 1932, and also the prefecture around it; the city is the usual sense and is taken here, and the prefecture cannot be excluded. The point stands for the old city as an area, not the place the plant was grown. No source read gives the old city's area. The five present-day central wards (Chiyoda, Chūō, Minato, Bunkyō and Taitō) reach 3.4, 4.1, 6.5, 6.8 and 7.0 km from the point; the old city's wards also took in ground in neighbouring present-day wards, and the uncertainty allows for that. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 9 km. The label's (栽) says that the plant was grown, and it names no place within Tokyo.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label is the printed form of a specimen dealer, the specimen department of the Kyoto firm Shimadzu Seisakusho, and names no collector. The firm made up and supplied the specimen; it is not taken as the collector, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. s.n. form. The department began making specimens in 1891, was set up within the firm in 1895 and closed in 1944, and its business passed to Kyoto Kagaku in 1948 (Japanese Wikipedia; Kyoto Kagaku's history page). No source read says that it made botanical sets, or how its sheets reached China. No. 20 is taken to be the dealer's specimen number, and the stamped 1007721 and pencilled 170 are not used.
Taxon. The label prints Cannabia, a misprint; the scientific name field gives Cannabis sativa L.
Local name. Asa, the label's katakana アサ, goes in the local name field.
Place. The province field takes Tokyo, which contains the old city on either reading of the label. No municipality is entered, because the old city is split among several present-day wards. The locality field gives the label's place in English, Tokyo, cultivated.
Image. The page carries no image. NSII publishes the scan with no licence of its own, and GBIF gives the occurrence CC BY-NC 4.0, which the wiki does not upload under; the label was read from NSII's image and the scan is cited.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue and GBIF give the specimen department of Shimadzu (岛津制作所标本部) as the collector. On the label the department is the firm that selected and supplied the specimen; the page leaves the collector empty.
- GBIF gives the year only; the day and month are the label's and the catalogue's (NSII).
- NSII and GBIF give the number 20, the label's No. 20, which the page takes for the dealer's specimen number.
