Wallich 4665F is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from lot F of entry 4665 in Nathaniel Wallich's numbered list of the East India Company's herbarium. The lot came from HBC., the Company's botanic garden at Calcutta.[1][2] The sheet is E00248608 at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.[3][4]
The Wallich lot
Entry 4665 of the list, Cannabis sativa, is printed on page 166 and divides into eight lots, lettered A to H, most of them identified by the herbarium or garden that supplied the material: lot E reads Hb. Wight and lot F HBC. Lots G and H, added on page 215, are dated gatherings, from Nepal in 1821 and Tong Dong in 1826.[1] The abbreviation HBC in Wallich's list stands for Hortus Botanicus Calcutta, the Calcutta botanic garden.[2] The list's main distribution began in December 1828 and ended in the summer of 1832 with entry 7683, on page 253.[5] The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds another sheet of the lot, K001039638, whose GBIF entry reads HBC.; Cannabis sativa; EICH number: 4665 F.[6]
The sheet
The sheet carries the stamps of the University of Glasgow's herbarium, GL.[7] Four pieces are mounted. Beside the one at the lower right is written Cannabis sativa, E.I.C. and Wall. L. n. 4665. F. Only that piece carries the lot number. Under the tall flowering stem on the left is written Canabis sativa with a second line that may read Brod. & R. Herb. The two smaller stems at the top carry no writing.[7]
