Wallich 4665D is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from lot D of entry 4665 in Nathaniel Wallich's numbered list of the East India Company's herbarium, a lot from Hb. Madr, the Madras herbarium.[1] The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds it as K001039637, on a sheet it shares with lot E.[2]
The Wallich lot
Entry 4665 of the list, Cannabis sativa, is printed on page 166 and divides into lots lettered A to F, most of them identified by the herbarium or garden that supplied the material; lots G and H were added on page 215.[1] Lot D reads indica Hb. Madr, the plant listed under the name Cannabis indica and supplied by the Madras herbarium. The Wallich Catalogue Online gives it no place, date or collector.[1]
Specimen and identification
Kew has mounted lots D and E on one sheet, boxed a = 4665.E and b = 4665.D, with a pencilled 4665. a Hb. Wight. b Hb. Madras.[3] Lot D is the right-hand stem, barcoded K001039637; lot E, K001039636, is the left-hand stem and belongs with Wallich 4665E (by 1832). A small slip at the lower right, pencilled 4665 and B as the stem is, reads Cañabis Indica and gives a month and year in brown ink, Octbr. and a year that is not clearly legible.[3] The catalogue names the plant Cannabis sativa L.[4]
McPartland and Small list the lot among their intermediate sheets, and again under var. indica, in both lists as from Chennai (Madras), undated.[5][6]
