Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The sheet documents Cannabis in the East India Company's herbarium by the summer of 1832, from a lot the list attributes to the Madras herbarium. Its slip gives a name and a month, and a year that cannot be read with confidence. It carries no place, habitat or use. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Kew's image (7142 × 10248 pixels).

  • Sheet: printed boxes a = 4665.E and b = 4665.D; pencil 4665. a Hb. Wight. b Hb. Madras.; pencil B beside the right stem.
  • Slip, lower right: Cañabis / Indica and a short abbreviation after it (read W[ill]d. and Wt, not agreed) / pencil 4665 and B / in brown ink Octbr. 18 and two more figures. One reading takes the year as 1811 (1821 not excluded), the other as 1811 or 1841. The year is not agreed, and the page does not store one.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Nothing below the country is named: the lot names a source herbarium, and the slip names no place. McPartland and Small's Chennai (Madras) is the seat of that herbarium, not a place the sheet gives for the plant. The country field takes India, the country of the Company's list.

Editorial treatment

Title. The title follows the live Wallich lots, Wallich 4665E (by 1832) and Wallich 4665F (by 1832): Wallich's name, the entry number and the lot letter. The year is the end of the list's main distribution, in the summer of 1832, which included page 166.

Stem. Kew's boxes pair the letter b with lot D, and the slip and the right-hand stem carry the same pencilled letter. The catalogue number is the barcode Kew assigns to lot D.

Collector. Left empty: the list names a herbarium, not a collector.

Source discrepancies

  • McPartland and Small (2020, supplementary list) give the lot the place Chennai. The list and the sheet give a herbarium, not a place.
