Vezirköprü is a landrace cannabis growing area in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, mapped on Vezirköprü district of Samsun Province. The crop is hemp (kenevir or kendir), grown for fibre and seed. In the 2018–19 season Vezirköprü was the only area in Turkey growing industrial hemp, and 58 farmers in the district grew it.[1]: 37, 42
The tract
The 15 growers surveyed by Mehmet Aydoğan and his co-authors farmed in the village of Narlısaray. The average hemp field of the district's farms was 3.4 decares.[1]: 42–43 Mehmet Taştemir, drawing on agronomy handbooks, lists Vezirköprü among the hemp-growing places of a northern zone that includes Samsun, Sinop, Kastamonu and Trabzon. At Vezirköprü, Sinop, Kastamonu and Taşköprü the hemp was also processed into goods.[2]: 4
Since 2000
Robert C. Clarke puts the hemp grown around Vezirköprü at about 400 hectares in 2000 and four hectares in 2015, and writes that new markets have brought more hemp to Samsun Province since 2015.[3]: 9 Ondokuz Mayıs University and the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute bred a hemp variety named Narlısaray, low in THC and high in fibre and stalk yield. In 2019 the state farm enterprise TİGEM had its seed grown under contract on 127 decares at Narlısaray, to multiply it quickly.[4]: 130
Cultivation
The growers of Narlısaray take three products from the crop: seed, fibre, and the stripped stalk (kıtık). Aydoğan and his co-authors sorted the farms they surveyed into five groups by what they sell. Some grow for seed and fibre and sell the stalk unstripped, some grow for fibre only, and one group strips the fibre by machine.[1]: 43 In their costings for 2018–19, hemp grown for both seed and fibre, with the stalk sold unstripped, paid better than wheat, sugar beet, sunflower and silage maize as grown in the region.[1]: 35
