1972 UMS Turkey T A2 Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Turkey. It is known from four herbarium sheets gathered between 31 July and 1 August 1972 by Richard Evans Schultes, Timothy Plowman and T. E. Lockwood in the National Institute of Mental Health Cannabis Garden of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The labels carry the lot code T A2 and call the plants the second generation of original sample. The sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1]
Seed lot
Every label reads Turkish, second generation of original sample.[1] The generation before it is T A1 (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720001-R1). That season the garden also grew the original sample, T A (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720001) and T A3 (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720001-R3), and the Turkish third seed lot, T C (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720002). Earlier Turkish seed had been grown at the university under M. W. Quimby's codes MS-SDD, MS-SEE, MS-SPP and MS-SY in 1970 (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700001, UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700002, UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700003, UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700004) and MS-SFF, MS-SGG and MS-SHHH in 1971 (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710001, UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710002, UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710003).
Grow-out
The garden lay on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The sheets of this lot carry the plant numbers 60 A, 60B, 61 A and 61 B, one letter to a plant.[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[2] Schultes and his co-authors later wrote that their collections and studies in the extensive Mississippi plantation and elsewhere had shown that the characters of growth habit in cannabis seemed to be genetically stable.[3]: 356
Specimens and identification
The original label name is Cannabis sp. On 16 February 1976 Ernest Small determined the four sheets as Cannabis sativa Linnaeus, the name under which Harvard files them.[1]
