1970 UMS Thailand MS-SM and MS-SO Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Thailand. It is known from four herbarium sheets that M. W. Quimby gathered between August and October 1970 at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Mississippi, whose labels carry the codes MS-SM and MS-SO and the same seed note, Thailand Marihuana Seed, 1-17-70. The sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1][2][3][4]
Seed lot
The four sheets fall under two codes. The two MS-SO sheets, dated 12 August and 11 October 1970, and one of the two MS-SM sheets, dated 19 September 1970, read Thailand Marihuana Seed, 1-17-70, QCD 65471.[1][4][3] Harvard transcribes the other MS-SM sheet as Thailand Marihuana Seed, Jan. 17, 1970. QDC 65471.[2] Quimby had grown Thai seed under the code MS-SL in 1969 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019690001), and in 1971 a Thai lot coded Ti D1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019710001). In 1972 the university's garden grew three Thai seed lots, Ti B1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720001), Ti C1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720002) and Ti D1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720003).
Grow-out
The plants grew on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi, under cultivation in silt-like soil (loess).[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[5]
Specimens and identification
All four sheets came to Harvard from the herbarium of the Department of Pharmacognosy of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The original label name is Cannabis sativa Linnaeus. On 16 February 1976 Ernest Small determined them as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, the name under which Harvard files them.[1]
