1972 UMS Korea K A Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Korea. It is known from eight herbarium sheets gathered between 31 July and 1 August 1972 by Richard Evans Schultes, Timothy Plowman and T. E. Lockwood in the National Institute of Mental Health Cannabis Garden of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The labels carry the lot code K A, and six of the eight call it the original sample. The sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1]
Seed lot
Six labels give the code with the words Korean and original sample.[1] The labels of sheets 00449599 and 00449596 read K A - Korean, first generation. planted 3-21-1972.[2][3] Five of the eight labels add that the lot was planted on 21 March 1972 (3-21-1972).[4][5][6][3][2] That season the garden also grew K A1 (UMS-KOR-UNK-0019720001-R1), which its labels call a first generation, and K A2 (UMS-KOR-UNK-0019720001-R2), a second generation.
Grow-out
The garden lay on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The sheets of this lot carry seven plant numbers, from 82 A to 83 C, one letter to a plant.[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[7] Schultes and his co-authors later wrote that their collections and studies in the extensive Mississippi plantation and elsewhere had shown that the characters of growth habit in cannabis seemed to be genetically stable.[8]: 356
Specimens and identification
On 16 February 1976 Ernest Small determined the eight sheets as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, the name under which Harvard files them.[1] On the same day he determined the sheets of K A2 as Cannabis sativa var. kafiristanica.
