Evidentiary scope
The locality states cultivation in a named oasis on a named day: Cultivé dans l'oasis de Guémar (Souf), 17 April 1858. Among the Algerian sheets this is the most specific cultivation statement, because it fixes a crop to an oasis and not to a colonial estate. It still says nothing about who grew the plant, from what seed, at what scale or for what use and it names no variety and no local name. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
The Souf is an oasis belt in the north-eastern Algerian Sahara, worked by hand-dug ghout plantations. Nothing in this sheet describes that system and the article does not claim it does.
The label has not been read
An image of this sheet is published with the GBIF occurrence, but `mediaphoto.mnhn.fr` and `science.mnhn.fr` both sit behind a bot check that refuses automated requests. The article rests on the catalogue's own transcription of the label, republished through GBIF and not on a reading of the sheet.
The missing collector is the reason this matters most here. The catalogue gives s.c., for sine collectore, which records that the publisher found no collector, not that the sheet bears none. A name, a hand or a herbarium stamp on the sheet could settle it. Re-reading the sheet is on the batch follow-ups list.
Georeferencing
Guémar is a town of the Souf, in El Oued Province, north of El Oued itself. The locality names the oasis and not a plot. No altitude or habitat is carried, so no coordinate or elevation is asserted.
Editorial treatment
The title follows the form used for Anon. s.n., Samulcottah (1822), the other accession in the corpus whose sheet names no collector: Anon. stands in the collector position and the locality and year complete the title. The collector and collector-number fields are left empty and not filled with Anon., so that queries on collector return nothing and not a placeholder.
The date is a full day and is stored as such. It is not the publisher's year-only encoding, which appears as a 1 January to 31 December span on Steinheil s.n., Bône (1834) and Barat s.n., Sig (1850).
