Schultes 26504 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected near Kandahar, Afghanistan, in December 1971 by Richard Evans Schultes, from a bushy plant about a metre tall. A sheet is held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria, and Ernest Small and Arthur Cronquist cited the number, with duplicates at Ottawa (DAO) and Harvard (ECON), in their 1976 classification of Cannabis.[1][2]: 428
Collection and locality
Harvard's index gives the locality as Near Kandahar and the date as 13–20 December 1982.[1] The numbers on either side of it, 26503 and 26505, are dated 13–20 December 1971 in the same index,[3][4] and Small determined this sheet on 16 March 1976.[1] Another of Schultes's numbers from near Kandahar that month, 26505, was designated in 2020 the epitype of Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica (Schultes 26505 (1971)).[5]
Field observations
Harvard transcribes the note on the sheet as Bushy plant 3.5 ft. tall. Foliage full and branches not spreading. whole plant smells of citronella oil.[1]
Specimen and identification
On 16 March 1976 Small determined the sheet as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, the name under which Harvard files it. Its Economic Botany Herbarium accession number is ECON 21560.[1] Small and Cronquist cite 26504 among the Afghan collections of C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica.[2]: 428
