Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The note on the sheet describes the plant (Bushy plant 3.5 ft. tall. Foliage full and branches not spreading. whole plant smells of citronella oil) and says nothing about where or how it grew. With no evidence of habitat or cultivation, the accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The sheet has not been seen, and Harvard has published no image of it. The fields above are Harvard's transcription in its specimen index, read on 15 October 2026 (barcode 00429204): locality Near Kandahar; collector R. E. Schultes; collector number 26504; accession number ECON 21560; the note quoted above. Small and Cronquist cite a duplicate at the Ottawa herbarium (DAO). It is not in GBIF, and its label has not been read.
Georeferencing
The point 31.62, 65.72 is the city of Kandahar, OpenStreetMap node 97993575 (Wikidata Q45604 puts it at 31.62068, 65.71588). The catalogue's Near Kandahar names the city and no place near it. The city's area in Wikidata is about 800 km², a radius of about 16 km, and near allows the gathering to lie somewhat beyond it, so the uncertainty is put at about 20 km. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 20 km.
Editorial treatment
The title takes Schultes's number 26504. Harvard's index gives it as the collector number, and Small and Cronquist cite it as Schultes 26504. The collection date is stored to the month, December 1971, because the catalogue gives a range, 13–20 December, as it does for the other numbers of that week. The collector field takes R.E. Schultes, as on Schultes 26505 (1971). The province field takes Kandahar Province. The scientific name is Ernest Small's determination of 16 March 1976.
Source discrepancies
- Date. Harvard's index dates the sheet 1982-12-13 - 1982-12-20. The year cannot be right: Small determined the sheet on 16 March 1976, and Small and Cronquist cite the number in August 1976. The other numbers of the run, 26503 and 26505 to 26508, are dated 13–20 December 1971 in the same index, and the page takes that date.
