Qingshui County is a hemp growing area of Gansu, China, in the city of Tianshui on the border with Shaanxi, drawn on the county. In 2026 the state news agency Xinhua called it "a core main producing area of hemp growing in Gansu Province and indeed the whole country" (甘肃省乃至全国的汉麻种植核心主产区), where hemp has traditionally been grown.[1] A report of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences names Qingshui dama (清水大麻, Qingshui hemp) among the local varieties that made up most of China's hemp crop.[2]
Hemp growing
Qingshui lies where the Longshan (陇山) hills give way to the Loess Plateau.[1] In September 2026 Xinhua reported the harvest at a hemp base at Cuiliu village, Hongbao town, where machines and hand labour were cutting a continuous stand. The county, it wrote, had been building on its traditional hemp growing in recent years by introducing improved varieties, dense planting, precision sowing by machine and the scientific management of water and fertiliser, and by trying rapeseed or wheat with hemp as a second crop, moving from scattered traditional plots to growing on a larger scale. Companies, cooperatives and farmers grow hemp under contract with guaranteed purchase. The fibre is used for textiles, the stalks for biomass fuel and the seed for oil, and the county has built lines for the first processing of fibre and fuel pellets.[1]
The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences lists Qingshui dama with Gushi kuima (固始魁麻) and Lu'an hanma (六安寒麻) as examples of the local varieties that made up most of the country's hemp crop.[2]
