Yu County (蔚县, Yù Xiàn) is a hemp growing area of north-western Hebei, China, drawn on Yu County, in the city of Zhangjiakou. The county was Yuzhou (蔚州) until 1913.[1] Its hemp, the Dabaipi (大白皮) of Yuzhou, is listed among China's noted local varieties,[2] and seed of a hemp landrace, CZ38, was collected there in 2020.[3]: Table S1
Yuzhou hemp
An agricultural encyclopedia lists the Dabaipi of Yuzhou, in Hebei, among China's noted local varieties of hemp: its seed is greyish white, the young heart leaves of the seedling are yellowish green, and its fibre is white and lustrous.[2] The same encyclopedia names the white hemp of Yuzhou (蔚州白麻), with the hemps of Laiwu in Shandong and of Changzhi in Shanxi, among the Chinese hemps known for their quality on the international market.[4]
Landrace
Jun Li and colleagues collected the achenes of twenty hemp landraces in nine provinces of China in 2020 for a study of their chemistry, and stored the seed in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine, at the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica.[3] Their landrace CZ38 comes from Yu County, which the table spells "Weixian". Its achenes are large and light-coloured, at 62.5 g per thousand.[3]: Table S1
