Lu'an is a hemp growing area of Anhui, China, on the alluvial belt of the Pi River (淠河) at the city of Lu'an, drawn on the city's Yu'an District. Its local hemp, hánmá (寒麻), is one of the landraces that a report of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences names among the varieties that made up most of China's hemp crop.[1] In 2019, according to the Lu'an statistics bureau, 1,305 hectares of hemp were sown in the city, 93 per cent of them in Yu'an District.[2]
Local hemp
Hemp has long been grown at Lu'an. Its main kinds are hánmá, also called kuímá (魁麻), and huǒmá (火麻).[2] According to an agricultural encyclopedia entry, the Lu'an hemp district grows both kinds: the early-ripening huǒmá is sown early and the late-ripening hánmá late,[3] and hemp is the centre of a rotation that takes two crops a year, hemp and grain.[3] A report of 2022 on hemp growing, drawing on the city's statistics, says that Lu'an hemp is a kind grown in the particular conditions of the Pi River basin: the river's alluvial belt is well watered and fertile, and the plants grow tall and unbranched, with thick bark and long, strong fibre.[2]
A report of the academy's Institute of Bast Fiber Crops on a national research system for bast-fibre crops lists the local varieties Gushi kuima (固始魁麻), Qingshui dama (清水大麻) and Lu'an hanma (六安寒麻) as examples of the landraces that made up most of the country's hemp crop. Its plan for the system provided for a Lu'an hemp experiment station, to be formed from the staff of the Lu'an Municipal Institute of Agricultural Sciences, to demonstrate new hemp varieties and extend their techniques.[1]
Hemp growing at Subu
In 2019 Yu'an District sowed 1,215 hectares of hemp and harvested 7,442 tonnes, 96.9 per cent of the city's crop.[2] The town of Subu (苏埠), called "China's hemp capital" (中国麻都), is said in the same report to grow several hundred hectares along both banks of the old course of the Pi; it makes hemp rope, hemp cloth, xiàbù (夏布, summer cloth) and hemp carpets, and has fishing-net and hemp-textile companies. In 2021 the town grew 118 hectares and harvested 318 tonnes.[2]
