The Malana population is the cannabis of Malana village and its fields in the Malana appellation, in the Malana Valley growing area of Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India. Malana village, at 2,600 m, is the main permanent settlement of the valley. The Tosco and Malndr fields lie near it.[1] The Zomia Collective's collection documentation classes the valley's cannabis as a narrow-leaflet drug-type landrace population, from which charas is made.[1]

Accessions

Five accessions were collected at Malana under the expedition code HIMA01: the general population, a village selection, selections from the Tosco and Malndr fields and a feral selection. One accession held by The Real Seed Company also comes from Malana.

Pressures

The Zomia Collective's index of growing regions tags the Malana terrace fields "Eradications Ongoing", a tag it defines as "Active eradication observed or reported".[2] The collection documentation calls the Malana landrace endangered. It attributes genetic contamination to the road built to the village and to the introduction of modern hybrids. It also reports tourism and economic pressure pushing farmers towards higher-yielding hybrids.[1]
