Mae Rim is a cannabis growing area in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province, in the Northern Thailand growing region. Hmong households at Ban Mae Sa Noi and Ban Mae Sa Mai grow hemp for cloth,[1][2] and herbarium sheets from the Mae Sa watershed show cannabis cultivated there in 1977 and 1996.[3][4]
Geography
The cultivated plants on the sheets were gathered in the Mae Sa watershed: at Mae Hat, at 600 m, and at Pan Lung, at 1,000 m in hill evergreen forest, in 1977,[3][5] and at Maesa Mai village in 1996.[4] The Daomong hemp-cloth enterprise is at Ban Mae Sa Noi, in Pong Yaeng subdistrict.[2] Mae Rim was one of the 15 districts opened to hemp under a ministerial regulation approved by the Cabinet on 6 September 2016.[1]
Cultivation
Hemp
At Ban Mae Sa Noi a Hmong villager told a reporter in 2018 that each household must have a hemp garment for its dead to wear at the funeral, and so every household had to plant hemp.[1] At Ban Mae Sa Mai in 2019 a group making hemp goods for sale had seed from the Royal Project; the village head said that in the past the Hmong had grown the plant themselves.[6] In 2023 the Daomong enterprise grew hemp on more than 3 rai (about half a hectare) at Ban Mae Sa Noi and made cloth and clothing from the bark fibre.[2] A clothing brand in Chiang Mai bought hemp cloth from Hmong weavers in Mae Rim in 2021.[7]
Cannabis for smoking
In July 1977 J.-P. Boulanger collected a plant at Mae Hat that the label calls plante cultivée, a cultivated plant, of which only the leaves were taken. Its local name is written kanscha, the last letter unclear.[3] In November of the same year he collected another at Pan Lung, growing among hill rice and not yet in flower.[5] A sheet collected at Maesa Mai village on 7 August 1996 gives the local name Kancha and the note "Shrub 2-4 m high. Flower white. Cultivated for narcotic use."[4]
