Doi Chiang Dao is a cannabis growing area in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province, in the Northern Thailand growing region. It takes its name from the mountain Doi Chiang Dao. Since 2021 a licensed farm in Chiang Dao has grown cannabis in greenhouses for sale.[1]

Geography

The area covers Chiang Dao District, north of Chiang Mai, with the mountain inside it. Cannabis was gathered for herbaria on Doi Chiang Dao on 18 November 1962, from a plant whose label reads "Herb, common in plantation, frts. black",[2] and in Doi Chiang Dao National Park on 19 February 1999.[3] The two sheets are Bunchuai 1208 (1962) and Nanakorn 8642 (1999).

Cultivation

A grower named Aon gave up her family's vegetable farm in Chiang Dao for cannabis in 2021 and put 6 million baht into the Chiang Dao Cannabis Farm. The farm had three greenhouses, two of them in use with 140 plants each. Its three-year licence from the Ministry of Public Health for commercial sale and processing was displayed on the counter of the farm shop.[1]

The Highland Research and Development Institute traces its hemp programme to remarks by Queen Sirikit in 2003 and 2004 urging that hill farmers be helped to grow hemp for cloth and income, and places the 2004 remark at the Huai Mae Kiang watershed in Mueang Na subdistrict of Chiang Dao. The institute and the Royal Project Foundation have studied the growing and processing of hemp since 2005.[4]
