Liu Ying 10878 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on Xiao Wutai Shan (小五台山), in the mountains of northwestern Hebei, China, on 13 August 1935 by a collector the label names as 刘瑛, Liu Ying. The Missouri Botanical Garden holds a sheet as 105702354,[1] and the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing a second as PE 00557914.[2]
Collection and locality
The label is a later copy of the collecting data, written in simplified characters on a form of the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院植物研究所). It gives the date 1935年8月13日 (13 August 1935), the collector and number 刘瑛 10878, and the place 河北省 (Hebei province) and 小五台山 (Xiao Wutai Shan), followed by two characters that could not be read. A stamp reads Liu Ying.[3] A printed tag of the Shansi-Chihli Exp. of 1929, with W. Y. Hsia's name, is stamped over with Y. Liu, 1935 and numbered 10878.[3] The catalogue gives the collector, number and date, with no locality.[1] The Beijing sheet carries a typed form of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plant Taxonomy with the number 10878, the collector 劉瑛 (stamped), the date 1935年8月 (August 1935) with the day left blank, and the place 小五台山寺溝 (Xiaowutai Shan, the temple gully). A reused printed tag of the Shansi-Chihli Exp. of 1929, with T. Tang's name, is stamped over with 1935 and numbered 10878 in pencil.[4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
Specimen and identification
A determination slip names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn., signed 定名人 (determined by) Cao Ziyu, February 1987.[3] A slip on the Beijing sheet names it Cannabis sativa L., determined by Y. Liu.[4] Yang 113 (1935) was gathered on the same massif in the same year. The catalogue records Cannabis sativa L.[1] The image is published under a non-commercial licence and is not reproduced here. Liu Ying gathered cannabis again in Hebei in 1950: Liu Ying 13331 (1950).
