Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant on Xiao Wutai Shan in August 1935. It gives no habitat, altitude, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Missouri image (2000 × 3000 pixels, through GBIF's image cache).
- Label (printed form, simplified characters, filled in by hand): 植物 / 中国科学院植物研究所 / 植物标本室 / 日期 1935年8月13日 / 采集人及号数 刘瑛 10878 / 产地 河北省 … 县 小五台山 followed by two characters read once as 青洲 and once as 李洲, both uncertain / stamp Liu Ying.
- Tag. Printed Shansi-Chihli Exp. / Coll. W. Y. Hsia, 1929, stamped Y. Liu / 1935, No. 10878. The same reused tag stock appears on King 460 (1936).
- Determination slip. Cannabis sativa Linn. / 定名人 Cao Ziyu 1987年2月.
- Beijing sheet (PE 00557914), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (PE 00557914, 990 × 1,440 pixels). / Coll. T. Tang, 1929 / No., stamped over in purple with CHILI and 1935, and 10878 in pencil. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit Y. Liu (by hand). Fan Memorial Institute of Biology stamp; red 70877. The readings agree on the form; one marks the collector's second character and the place's last character uncertain, and reads the tag as Shensi-Chili Exp., with Y. LIU stamped across it.
The form was printed after the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded in 1949, so the label copies the collecting data from an earlier record; the tag is the contemporary document.
Georeferencing
Xiaowutai Shan (小五台山, Wikidata Q953902) is a massif in Yu and Zhuolu counties, Zhangjiakou, Hebei. Chinese Wikipedia gives it about 40 km from east to west and 45 km from north to south, with its highest summit, Dongtai, at 2,882 m. OpenStreetMap maps its five summits (Dongtai, Beitai, Zhongtai, Nantai and Xitai, 2,671 to 2,882 m) but no outline of the massif or of its nature reserve. The point 39.90, 115.02 is Zhongtai (中台), the central of the five summits, OpenStreetMap node 940020558 (2,801 m), taken as the middle of the massif, which no source measures. It is an area point for the massif, not the place the plant was gathered. The Beijing sheet adds 寺溝 (temple gully) after the mountain's name. OpenStreetMap has villages named 寺沟 about 27 km north-north-west (西寺沟村, 东寺沟村) and about 27 km south-west (进寺沟村) of the central summit, and others further off; the label does not say which, if any, it means. The labels give no altitude. The province field takes Hebei. An earlier version of this note gave no point, on the ground that a massif gives no collection point. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 30 km.
Editorial treatment
Image. Missouri publishes the image under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; it is read and cited, not uploaded.
Collector. The collector field takes the stamp's Liu Ying. The Harvard botanist index has a Y. Liu of the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology who collected in Hopei in 1936; nothing read ties him to this sheet or to the 1950 gathering, and the characters 刘瑛 appear in no reference record found, so the name is not linked.
Title. The title takes the stamp's full romanised name, Liu Ying, which also keeps it apart from Liu L2441 (1929).
Two sheets, one accession. The Missouri and Beijing sheets share the collector, the number, the month and the mountain. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the determination date as 1997; the slip reads 1987年2月 (February 1987).
- The catalogue gives no locality; the label names Hebei and Xiao Wutai Shan.
- The Missouri label gives 1935年8月13日; the Beijing form gives 1935年8月, the day blank.
- The Missouri label's last two place characters were read as 青洲 and as 李洲, both uncertain; the Beijing form reads 寺溝.
