Kuah beulangong is a meat curry of Aceh, cooked in a large pot that is called a beulangong in Acehnese and can measure up to a metre across.[1] Musanna, Nabilah and Suip describe it as a goat or beef curry.[2]: 85 In their account each village has its own cook for it, generally a man, who prepares it for weddings, the Prophet's birthday and other feasts.[2]: 91
Journalists and researchers report that ground cannabis seed goes into the dish to make the meat tender and to improve its taste. The Merdeka.com correspondent in Aceh told the paper in 2017 that the seed was ground and added to make the meat cook tender quickly. He said it was an open secret that most Acehnese cooking, kuah beulangong above all, used it, although stall-holders would not admit to it.[1] In January 2020 Syardani M. Syarif, a commentator on cannabis from Aceh, named kuah beulangong among the Acehnese dishes often cooked with cannabis seed. He said the practice went back to the time of "nenek buyut kita" (our great-grandparents) and that the seed was now seldom used because the law had grown strict.[3]
Musanna and colleagues, writing from interviews in Banda Aceh, Bireuen and Aceh Besar, report that some cooks still add the seed. Each cook judges the amount, which varies with the quantity of meat and broth, and less goes into beef than into goat. They write that "the use of cannabis in cooking is only used specifically for 'Kuah Beula Ngong'".[2]: 91
