Hummel 164 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis collected in the Bogdo Ola (Bogda Shan), the mountains east of Ürümqi in Xinjiang, China, on 7 June 1928 by David Hummel of Sven Hedin's Sino-Swedish Expedition. The Swedish Museum of Natural History holds the sheet as S-GH-4806.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label of the expedition reads Turkestania sinensis (Prov. Sinkiang): in montibus Bogdo Ola (Chinese Turkestan, province of Sinkiang: in the Bogdo Ola mountains) and D. Hummel. It is completed by hand with the number 164, the date 7/6 1928 and the place Ozun-ava.[2] The catalogue gives the same place and date.[1]
Specimen and identification
The label names the genus only, Cannabis, and the catalogue records the sheet as Cannabis L.[1] The sheet carries three slender young stems with small tufts of leaves, pulled up with their roots.[2] A duplicate of the gathering is held at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin as B 10 0648266, filed as Cannabis sp.[3] Hummel's other gatherings catalogued as cannabis in the Bogdo Ola that summer are numbers 679, 874, 908 and 909; a year earlier he had collected a cultivated plant in southern Mongolia, Hummel 1330 (1927).
