Zenzinov s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from Nerchinsk, in the Transbaikal Oblast of the Russian Empire, today in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia, collected by M. A. Zenzinov and dated 1857. A pencilled slip on the sheet calls the plant Дикая Конопля (wild hemp). The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0062806.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label is that of the Императорское Русское Общество Акклиматизации. Флористическое Отделение (Imperial Russian Society of Acclimatisation, Floristic Section). It carries the name Cannabis sativa L. by hand, a faint stamp giving the collector, the town and the year, М. А. Зензинов, Нерчинск. 1857, of which some letters have not printed, a violet stamp Забайкальская обл. (Transbaikal Oblast), the words Герб. Зензинова (Zenzinov's herbarium) by hand, and a signature. A separate slip in pencil reads Дикая Конопля (wild hemp).[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the year, the place and a point.[1] The sheet gives no day, month, number or habitat.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries one long, sparsely branched stem with its roots and a few palmate leaves near the top.[2] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., the name under which the catalogue files it; no later determination slip is on the sheet.[2][1] Who wrote wild hemp on the slip, and on what grounds, the sheet does not say.
