Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The sheet places cannabis at Nerchinsk by 1857 and a slip calls it wild hemp. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3477 × 5050 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Printed label. ИМПЕРАТОРСКОЕ РУССКОЕ ОБЩЕСТВО АККЛИМАТИЗАЦІИ. / Флористическое Отдѣленіе.
  • By hand. Cannabis sativa L. / Герб. Зензинова / a signature.
  • Stamps. Grey, faint: М. А. З[ЕНЗИН]ОВ, [Н]ЕР[ЧИН]СК. 1857. Violet: Забайкальская обл.
  • Slip (pencil, separate paper). Дикая Конопля.
  • Readings that differ. The stamp's year was read 1857 and 1957; a third look on an enhanced crop finds the third figure to be the faint half of an 8, with nothing of a 9, and 1957 is excluded in any case by the label's pre-1918 spelling and the Imperial society that printed it. The stamp's town was read [Н]ЕР[ЧИН]СК and …ЕРЧИНСК; the catalogue gives Нерчинск. The signature was read Стуков and Стука; the catalogue gives the determiner as Stukov. The page reports a signature without a name.
  • The stamped number 119802 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 51.980092, 116.572981 is the one the herbarium's database publishes for this sheet, with an uncertainty of 4,500 m. It lies in the town of Nerchinsk, 1.1 km from the town's point in OpenStreetMap (node 278298564) and inside the town's mapped area (way 165062418, about 6 by 7 km); the database's radius is about the town's size. The label names the town and no spot in it. The town has stood on its present site since 1812, when it was moved from the banks of the Shilka, so an 1857 label means the same place. SRTM gives 473 m there; the label gives no altitude. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 4.5 km.

Editorial treatment

Date. The stamp, which carries the collector's name, the town and the year, is the only date on the sheet. The infobox stores the year 1857, as the catalogue does; it may be the year of the gathering or of the collection as a whole, which the sheet does not say.

Determiner. The catalogue names Stukov as the determiner. The signature on the label is not read alike by the two readings and does not say in what role it was written, so the determiner field is left empty.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's M. A. Zenzinov, the stamp's М. А. Зензинов. No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue names Stukov as the determiner; the label carries a signature that the readings do not agree on, with no role stated.
