Page scope
Yu County, Hebei treats Yu County (蔚县), in Zhangjiakou, north-western Hebei, the Yuzhou (蔚州) of older sources, as a hemp growing area: the Yuzhou hemp of the agricultural encyclopedia and the landrace CZ38 collected there in 2020. The title carries the province because Yu County in Shanxi (盂县) has the same English name.

Discussion
Why Yu County is a growing area
- Li and colleagues (2026), Table S1: landrace CZ38, collected in 2020, from "Weixian, Zhangjiakou, Hebei, China". Weixian is a reading of 蔚县, the county's name.
- The entry on hemp germplasm in an agricultural encyclopedia (智汇三农, 2016) names 河北蔚州大白皮, the Dabaipi of Yuzhou in Hebei, among China's noted local varieties, with greyish-white seed and white, lustrous fibre.
- The encyclopedia's entry on hemp names 河北蔚州白麻, the white hemp of Yuzhou, with Laiwu hemp and the Lu hemp of Changzhi, as known on the international market for its quality.
Names
- The character 蔚 is read yù in the county's name. Yuzhou became Yu County in 1913; a county of that name had also existed under the Qing, from 1693 until it was merged back into the department in 1757.
How the border is drawn
- The sources name the county, under its old name Yuzhou and as Weixian, and no place within it. The line follows Yu County as OpenStreetMap maps it (relation 3295570): about 3,200 km², the figure in the infobox.
- The infobox point (39.87, 114.70) is the centre of the border, not a field.
Herbarium sheets inside the line
Two herbarium sheets from Xiao Wutai Shan, in the south-east of the county, lie inside the line: Liu Ying 10878 (1935) and Yang 113 (1935). Neither label records cultivation, so neither is listed as an accession of the area.
Growing status
The status is Active: seed of the landrace CZ38 was collected in the county in 2020. The encyclopedia entries are undated.
Sources
- Li and colleagues (2026). The achenes of twenty landraces from nine provinces were collected in 2020 and stored in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Table S1 gives each landrace's origin, seed size, thousand-seed weight and colour; CZ38's thousand-seed weight is 62.53 g.
- 智汇三农 (2016). A website carrying the hemp entries of a Chinese agricultural encyclopedia; the pages are dated 13 April 2016.
Open questions
- Whether the white hemp (白麻) of one entry and the Dabaipi of the other are one variety is not settled by the encyclopedia.
