Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant at Pekin and names its collector; it gives no date, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the holder's image (4310 × 5983 pixels).

  • Label (printed head, handwritten): Ex herbario horti Petropolitani. / Cannabis sativa L. / Pekin Skatschkow.
  • Stamps. A skull and crossbones; BOTANISCHE SAMMLUNGEN der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule; barcode ZT-00142968.

Georeferencing

The coordinate, 39.90, 116.41, is Wikidata's point for Beijing (Q956, which carries the aliases Pekin and Peking), 39.90403, 116.407526, at the old city, rounded to two decimals; SRTM gives 52 m there. It stands for the city the label names, not for a collection site in or near it. The province field takes Beijing.

Editorial treatment

Image. GBIF states a licence for the ETH data (CC BY 4.0) but none for the image, so the image is not uploaded until the holder states one.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's Skatschkow. He is probably Konstantin Andrianovich Skachkov (1821–1883), the Russian sinologist who ran the magnetic and meteorological observatory of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Peking from 1848 and returned to Russia in 1863, and who wrote on Chinese plants and crops; the Harvard botanist index has a C. A. Skatchkov collecting at Beijing. No source read says in terms that this sheet is his, so the name is not expanded or linked, and no date is inferred from his years in Peking.

Title. The label has no number or date, so the title takes the s.n. form with the place in its present-day form and (s.d.).

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives no country or place; the label reads Pekin.
  • The catalogue's date field holds the collector's name.
