Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is RSC-IND-ODI-0120240001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Province segment
ODIis for Odisha, which the listing names as "Orissa". - Year 2024 is the year in the sourcing line. The month digits are
01because no month is given. - Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this province segment.
Sourcing
The RSC listing for Odisha (Orissa) as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its eight versions in the Wayback Machine from April 2024 to June 2026; the Kwik Seeds listing Odisha – Orrisa Gold as it stood on 26 October 2026; and the GRIN-Global entries for G 33884 and G 33885. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose).
Evidentiary scope
The listing names the state and the year and nothing finer: no district, village or farmer. Its account of the centre of origin of Sativas, of the Ānandakanda and of the spread of Sativa landraces during the Age of Sail is RSC's own and cites no source; the article attributes it. The explanation of the early harvest by eradication pressure is RSC's inference and is attributed.
Lots at this listing
All eight archived versions are titled Odisha (Orissa) and give the 2024 sourcing, so one lot has been on sale and the page is not split.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace, sourcing type
Point of Origin, autochtonousYes: the listing describes a ganja landrace of the state, grown as a household herb and a commercial crop. - Collector.
Angus, as on the other accessions whose sourcing line reads "The Real Seed Company". - Growth pattern and branching. "Heavily branched and tends toward Christmas-tree" is entered as
Christmas treeandExtensive; "classic narrow leaflets" asNarrow. - Seed viability is left empty: neither listing reports a test.
- Conventions. Photoperiod
Short-dayand introgressionMinimalfollow the other RSC accessions; the listing states neither.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The listing names only the state, "Orissa", with a latitude of 18° N. Odisha covers about 155,700 km², far too large an area for one point to say where the seed was gathered.
Source discrepancies
- Height. RSC: "Approx. 2 metres". Kwik Seeds, and RSC until December 2024: "2 – 4 metres".
- The Ānandakanda. RSC: the method is "already strongly implied" in it. Kwik Seeds, and RSC until December 2024: the method "was first described" in it.
- Centre of origin. RSC: "close to the likely centre of origin". Kwik Seeds: "close to the centre of origin".
- Classification line. Kwik Seeds, and RSC until December 2024: "C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica"; RSC now gives none.
Photographs
The infobox image is the listing's only photograph, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing says nothing about where or when it was taken or what it shows, so the caption claims nothing beyond its source. The file name RSC gives it names "Orrisa Gold" and Odisha; a file name is not evidence of the place. The people in the field are not identified and are seen from a distance.
USDA genebank accessions
The USDA holds two lots named Odisha #1 and Odisha #2 (G 33884, G 33885, received 25 July 2024) from the same donor, both described as "Collected in Odisha (Orissa) from winter 2023 / 2024 harvest by Angus Pretty". They are not listed on this page. The RSC listing sells one lot, and nothing in the entries says which of the two, if either, it is. Both entries carry the point 17.49, 87.29. That point lies in the Bay of Bengal, about 290 km from the nearest Odisha coast in OpenStreetMap, so it is not used here.
