Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant on the floor of a rocky valley under an open stand of Ulmus pumila, south-west of Matad, in August 1987. It gives no altitude, use or note on cultivation. The determination as Cannabis ruderalis is the botanist's judgement from the specimen and is reported as such. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the holder's image (1713 × 2439 pixels, the IPK image service) and from its full-resolution regions.

  • Printed label. Herbarium des Instituts für Kulturpflanzenforschung der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin / Plantae mongolicae / Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. (typed) / Fundort: Aimak Dornod, Felstal im Gebiet Bajanchangoj ca. 11 km südwestlich vom Somonzentrum Matad, Talgrund mit lockerem Ulmus pumila-Bestand / Meereshöhe: (blank) / Blütenfarbe: (blank) / Mongolisch-Deutsche Expedition 6./8. 1987 Nr. 182 / pasted strip leg. K. Pistrick et Č. Sančir.
  • Determination labels. Institut für Kulturpflanzenforschung Gatersleben (GAT), Cannabis ruderalis Janisch., det.: Č. Sančir 1987/88; Leibniz-Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung Gatersleben (GAT), Cannabis sativa s.l., det: K. Pistrick 6.3.2012.

Georeferencing

The point 46.88, 115.19 is 11 km south-west of the centre of Matad (OpenStreetMap node 2377842881, 46.9525, 115.2918), the distance and direction the label gives, with south-west taken as 225°. It falls in Matad sum, Dornod (relation 7304687), which agrees with the label. SRTM gives 1,006 m there; the label gives no altitude. The track OpenStreetMap names Матад-Баянхангай (way 437803213), at 46.8623, 115.2676, lies 10.2 km south of the Matad centre and 6.2 km from this point; Bajanchangoj is very probably the same place as the Bayankhangai of Zhurba 486 (1975), and the label's bearing is the looser of the two figures, so the uncertainty is set to cover both. The catalogue gives no point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 7 km.

Editorial treatment

Image. GBIF states a licence for the Gatersleben data (CC0) but none for the image, and the image carries the notice copyright reserved, so it is not uploaded until the holder states a licence.

Collectors. The collector field keeps the label's K. Pistrick, first on the label and the 2012 determiner; the title follows it. Č. Sančir is named in the prose. The catalogue spells the first name Pistrik; the label reads Pistrick. No source read for this page gives either's full name, and none is linked.

Taxon. The infobox takes the catalogue's Cannabis sativa L., the nearest to the latest determination, Cannabis sativa s.l. (2012).

Date. The label's 6./8. 1987 is read as day 6, month 8, which the catalogue's 6 August 1987 confirms.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue's name is Cannabis sativa L.; the printed label and the 1987 determination read Cannabis ruderalis Janisch., and the 2012 determination Cannabis sativa s.l.
  • The catalogue spells the collector Pistrik, K.; the label reads K. Pistrick.
