Dating

The Reporter of Sunday 9 October 1983 places the spraying in "this week" without a day. The stored date is the date of the paper. On 12 and 13 October a State Department official told a House committee that one Mexican spraying operation in Belize "began last week".

Source discrepancies

The Reporter names "Two Mexican sprayer helicopters"; Amandala of 21 October names "four helicopters spraying daily" in Orange Walk. Amandala of 7 October quoted a source on "30 Mexican helicopters" in Corozal. This news item gives both Orange Walk figures, each with its paper.

Sources not used

Both texts read are the English reprints in the Joint Publications Research Service, Latin America Report No. 2770 (JPRS 84872, 2 December 1983), pp. 35–36. The original issues were not consulted.

The Reporter of 9 October 1983 names four districts. Each is recorded in its own news item: Corozal, Orange Walk (this news item), Cayo and Toledo.

Map pin

The spraying covered the district. The pin is Orange Walk Town, the district's seat, where the paper says the herbicide was stored; it marks the district, not a sprayed field.

These notes were recorded when the news item was prepared. Éloise 19:30, 21 October 2026 (+07)
