Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a flowering cannabis plant at Shoga Dzong, at 10,500ft. (10,500 feet), on 15 September 1947, with the words On dry open ground. (on dry ground in the open). It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label gives no use or note on cultivation.
Label reading
Read from the holder's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3504 pixels).
- Label (printed, typed entries): EX HERBARIO MUSEI BRITANNICI / FLORA OF SOUTH-EAST TIBET / Cannabis sativa L / Locality Shoga Dzong / Altitude 10,500ft. Date 15.9.1947 / Green flower with dark green calyx. On dry open ground. / F. LUDLOW, G. SHERRIFF, & H. H. ELLIOT No. 15714. Leiden stamp 100640.
- Folder cover (L.1163577, catalogued separately): Cannabis sativa / Tibet / Moraceae / Ludlow c.s. 15714 / (2048). It is a cover, not a second sheet, and is cited but not shown.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. Shoga Dzong was searched in Wikidata, the English Wikipedia and Nominatim, globally and within a box over southeastern Tibet, under several spellings; no hit is a dzong or is stated to be the Ludlow and Sherriff locality. The elevation field stores the label's 10,500 feet as 3,200 m (10,500 × 0.3048 = 3,200.4). The province field takes Tibet, as on Rohmoo Lepcha 57 (1912).
Editorial treatment
Collectors. The collector field takes F. Ludlow, the first name on the label and the form stored on Ludlow 19635 (1949), and the title follows it. The prose links Frank Ludlow (1885–1972) and George Sherriff (1898–1967) under their full names. The Harvard botanist index expands H. H. Elliot as Henry Harvey Elliot, but no source read says who he was, so he is named as the label prints him.
Leiden. The label is the British Museum's; the sheet is a duplicate distributed to Leiden.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue spells the second collector Scheriff; the label prints Sherriff.
- The catalogue gives no locality; the label gives Shoga Dzong.
