Rohmoo Lepcha 57 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered by Rohmoo Lepcha at Lingmuthang on 12 September 1912, at an altitude of 10,000 feet, about 3,048 m. Lingmuthang lies in the Chumbi Valley, a southward salient of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China that runs down between Sikkim and Bhutan.[1] The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248816.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 575175638.[3]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries a printed field label headed FLORA OF EAST HIMALAYA. Its fields are filled in pencil: Locality reads Lingmuthang, Altitude reads 10.000 and Date reads 12/9/12. Below the rule, No. reads 57, with Cannabis sativa, Linn. written beside it and the printed line Coll. Rohmoo Lepcha. at the foot.[4] A later pencil hand has added URTICACEAE above the heading and the word Hemp. beside the locality line.[4]
The catalogue gives the collector as Lepcha, Rhomoo, the number 57 and the date 12 September 1912. It gives the country as India and no locality. GBIF repeats both.[2][3] Two gatherings made by the same collector in the same season name the valley on their own labels: Kew holds Primula smithiana as K006559437, R. Lepcha 64 of August 1912, labelled Lingmuthang, Chumbi Valley, East Himalaya.[5] Harvard holds Pedicularis longiflora var. tubiformis as barcode 02644635, R. Lepcha 51 of 1912, labelled Lingmuthang, above Chumbi.[6]
Specimen and identification
The mounted plant is a whole branching top that fills the sheet, in fruit throughout.[4] The label names it Cannabis sativa, Linn. and the catalogue records it as Cannabis sativa L.[4][2]
Rohmoo Lepcha was a Lepcha collector from Sikkim who worked first for the Botanical Survey of India and then for the Lloyd Botanic Garden at Darjeeling. With his fellow collector Ribu he headed the team that followed William Wright Smith and George Herbert Cave through Sikkim in 1909 and 1910. His collecting reached the Chumbi Valley and Bhutan. His gatherings of 1912 include Primula chumbiensis.[7]
