Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels place a cannabis plant by the Chulak-terek river near Kuldja in June 1876. They do not say whether it was wild or cultivated. Small's later determination as var. spontanea is a taxonomic judgement made from the specimen, a century after collection, and is reported as his. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 2881 pixels).
- Stamped slip. Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis / ЛАРИОНОВЪ. / 1875–76. / ДЖУНГАРИЯ. ОКР. г. КУЛЬДЖИ.
- Handwritten slip. Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis / № 65 followed by a raised letter or mark that neither reading resolved / 26 іюня 1876 года / река Чулакъ-терекъ.
- Determinations. E. Small, 1 Sept. 1974: Cannabis sativa L.; E. Small, Aug. 1975: Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav.
One reading allowed 1846 for the year; the stamped slip's 1875–76 rules it out.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. Kuldja is Yining (Ghulja), in Ili, Xinjiang (Wikidata Q866021 carries the aliases Old Kuldja, Kulja and Ghulja). The Chulak-terek river was not found in Wikidata, Nominatim or the English and Russian Wikipedias; it is probably a stream in the Ili valley near the town. The province field takes Xinjiang.
The Ili valley around Kuldja was under Russian administration from 1871 to 1881, which is why a Russian collector worked there.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label gives the surname only, Ларионовъ. German sources of the 1870s cite plants from Kuldja collected by a Capitän or topographer Larionow, and the Harvard botanist index has a Larionow collecting in Turkestan in 1876–1878, but no source read gives his first name or dates. The collector field takes Larionov and the name is not linked.
Date. The label's date is in the Russian calendar of the time, which in 1876 ran twelve days behind the Gregorian; 26 June would be 8 July by the Gregorian calendar. The infobox stores the date as written, as the catalogue does.
Taxon. The infobox takes Small's later determination, var. spontanea.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives no number or locality; the label gives № 65 and the Chulak-terek river near Kuldja.
- The catalogue's name is Cannabis sativa L.; Small's 1975 slip on the sheet takes it to var. spontanea.
