Page scope
Ishim steppe is a Growing Region: a named region that sits above Growing Areas and below the regional complex and gene pool. It covers the part of the Ishim steppe in southern Tyumen Oblast, on the lands of the old Ishim okrug and Yalutorovsk uezd, where hemp and flax were sown at the end of the 19th century. The parts of the steppe in Kurgan and Omsk oblasts and in Kazakhstan are not part of the region.

Discussion

Why the region is on the map

  • Brockhaus and Efron, "Ишим, город" (1894): the Ishim okrug, an open steppe plain, «производить много льна и конопли» ("produces much flax and hemp"), and its people make cloth, rope and cable for sale from their extensive sowings of flax and hemp.
  • Brockhaus and Efron, "Ялуторовск" (1904): in 1902 the Yalutorovsk uezd had 6,255 desyatinas under hemp, and «Южная часть уезда принадлежит к так наз. Ишимской степи» ("the southern part of the uezd belongs to the so-called Ishim steppe").
  • Brockhaus and Efron, "Тобольская губерния" (1901): spinning hemp poskon' among the home crafts of the governorate's steppe belt.

The name

Ишимская степь is the name in the sources. Brockhaus and Efron (1894) place the steppe between the Irtysh and the Ishim; the Great Soviet Encyclopedia between the Irtysh and the Tobol, in Kurgan, Tyumen and Omsk oblasts and the North Kazakhstan Region. The historical names in the infobox are the two units for which the hemp is reported.

Growing status

  • The status is Historical: the sources for hemp sown on the steppe date from 1894 to 1904. The infobox gives 1902, the year of the Yalutorovsk sown-area figure, as the last year for which a source gives hemp sown; no source gives an earlier year for the sowings. No source says that hemp growing on the steppe came to an end.
  • Since 2000 the sources concern weedy hemp, not the crop. Malyshkin (2022) found weedy hemp forming a continuous cover on long-manured land, and on abandoned farmland and waste places, in Aromashevsky District (route surveys of 2017–2021). The plant-health service, Rosselkhoznadzor, reported in July 2024 weedy hemp 90–150 centimetres tall on farm plots in Zavodoukovsky District, which the holders destroyed after warnings.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy drawn on the districts of Tyumen Oblast formed from the Ishim and Yalutorovsk uezds, with OpenStreetMap relation numbers: Abatsky (1690636), Armizonsky (1686348), Aromashevsky (1690646), Berdyuzhsky (1690637), Golyshmanovsky (1690647), Isetsky (1647392), Ishimsky (1690639), Kazansky (1690640), Omutinsky (1690648), Sladkovsky (1690641), Sorokinsky (1690642), Uporovsky (1647391), Yalutorovsky (1672820) and Yurginsky (1690649) districts, Zavodoukovsky Okrug (1711469), and the towns of Ishim (1711405) and Yalutorovsk (1711462). Together they cover about 51,900 km².
  • The Russian Wikipedia articles on the districts give the volosts each was formed from in November 1923: Abatsky, Armizonsky, Berdyuzhsky, Golyshmanovsky, Sladkovsky and Sorokinsky from volosts of the Ishim uezd; Isetsky, Yalutorovsky and Yurginsky from volosts of the Yalutorovsk uezd. Ishimsky and Kazansky were formed in 1931 from districts made in 1923 out of Ishim uezd volosts; Uporovsky in 1932 from districts made out of Yalutorovsk uezd volosts; and Omutinsky in 1931 from districts made out of volosts of both uezds. Zavodoukovsky, formed in 1965, lies on land of the Zavodoukovsk and Novozaimsk volosts of the Yalutorovsk uezd. Aromashevsky was formed from volosts of the Ishim uezd and of the Tobolsk uezd.
  • Vikulovsky District is left out: three of the volosts it was formed from belonged to the Tara uezd and were joined to the Ishim uezd only in 1918–19, after the sources' time. Volosts of the Ishim uezd passed to the Petropavlovsk uezd in 1921–22 and now lie in Kazakhstan, and part of the Yalutorovsk uezd went to the Kurgan okrug in 1923; those lands are not drawn.
  • The infobox point (56.33, 68.33) is the centre of the shape. The border is not drawn from accession or news points.

Accessions

No accession lies inside the border. Mameev 144 (1915), gathered on a ravine slope near Tyumen, lies outside it.

  • Malyshkin (2022), Известия Оренбургского государственного аграрного университета, and Rosselkhoznadzor (Office for Tyumen Oblast, press release of 18 July 2024): weedy hemp since 2000.

Not used

  • Brockhaus and Efron on the Tyumen uezd notes considerable flax and hemp growing; the Tyumen uezd lies outside the region.
  • The Vavilov Institute holds local hemps whose origin is given as "Tyumen" (Grigoryev 2018). The label names the province only.

Open questions

  • Whether the parts of the Ishim steppe in Kurgan and Omsk oblasts and in the North Kazakhstan Region grew hemp at the same time.
  • Whether hemp went on being sown on the steppe after 1902, and when it stopped.
